heliguy™ Learning Management System
- Online Learning:
On-demand online learning through the heliguy™ Learning Management System. The content, delivered by the heliguy™ instructors, covers all you need to know to pass the A2 CofC. Access live support from heliguy™ in-house instructors from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
- Remote Theory Exam:
Sit your exam remotely via webcam. Answer 30 multiple-choice questions, covering air law/responsibilities, UAS airspace operating principles, and airmanship and aviation safety.
- Self-guided Practical Training:
This should be a minimum of 2 hours. Flight logs, along with supporting evidence to verify these flights, should be provided to heliguy™ to demonstrate this. Abide by rules and regulations you have learned around the A2 subcategory, and ideally conduct these flights 'far from people'.

What is the A2 CofC?⌄
The A2 CofC (Certificate of Competency) is a remote pilot competency certificate for the Open Category.
The A2 CofC allows pilots of class-marked drones weighing up to 4kg and non-class-marked drones weighing up to 2kg to fly in the A2 sub-category (Fly Near People).
Why do I need an A2 CofC?⌄
The A2 CofC is required to fly in the Open Category’s A2 subcategory - allowing you to fly heavier aircraft near to people.
The A2 subcategory is for:
• A drone and model aircraft that are UK2 class or European C2 class (up to 4kg).
• A drone or model aircraft that does not have a class mark and weighs up to 2kg. This will typically be non-class-marked drones weighing between 250g-2kg, as sub-250g drones can fly in the A1 subcategory (greater freedoms, ie flights over people) without an A2 CofC.
UK2/C2 drones in the A2 Subcategory - with an A2 CofC
• Reduce the horizontal separation in normal mode down to 30 metres from uninvolved people.
• 5-metres horizontal separation in low-speed mode.
Non-class-marked drones up to 2kg in the A2 subcategory - with an A2 CofC
• No flight closer than 50m from uninvolved people.
If you do not have an A2 CofC, you cannot fly in the A2 subcategory and will be restricted to flights in the A3 subcategory (Far from People) when flying in the Open Category.
What Happens If I Don't Have an A2 CofC?⌄
If you haven’t got an A2 CofC, you could find yourself limited in terms of where you can fly your drone.
Pilots who have a UK2 or C2 drone, or a non-class-marked drone between 250g and 2kg - but do not hold an A2 CofC - will need to conduct flights in the A3 subcategory (Far From People) when flying in the Open Category.
How Do I Obtain an A2 CofC?⌄
You can obtain an A2 CofC by completing a Ground School course with heliguy™, via our Learning Management System.
This enables you to complete the modules remotely in your own time and at your own convenience. heliguy™ instructors will be available though to assist if you need help or advice along the way, via our live messenger feed.
Once you have covered the syllabus, you can sit your exam remotely.
Unlike the GVC, there are no requirements to undergo a Practical Flight Test or complete an Operations Manual for the A2 CofC. However, there is a requirement to complete self-guided practical flight training.
The self-practical flight training must be completed before the ground school course, and it is important that you have registered with the CAA and obtained a Flyer ID before conducting the practical flight training.
Before conducting the self-practical flight training, you must successfully complete the CAA’s Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Service free online competency test, and be in possession of the Flyer ID number associated with that test.
What does the A2 CofC exam cover?⌄
The A2 CofC examination comprises a minimum of 30 multiple-choice questions.
Topics covered include meteorology; UAS flight performance; and technical and operational mitigations for ground risk. These subjects will be covered in your online learning.
Sit your exam remotely using a webcam. Flexible exam slots are available to book a time that suits you.
The exam, sat in formal conditions, is a closed-book format (except when questions require reference to charts, or other sources of specific aeronautical information).
The exam duration is 75 minutes, but candidates tend to complete the exam much quicker than this timeframe. Any candidate with a recognised disability or additional needs (e.g. dyslexia or dyspraxia) will be given an additional 15 minutes.
Practise tests and mock exams are available on heliguy™ LMS. You can resit these as many times as you like until you are confident in your ability to pass.
What do I need to sit the A2 CofC exam remotely?⌄
For your A2 CofC exam, which is sat remotely, you will require:
• A quiet, private space
• Desktop or laptop
• Webcam
• Microphone
• A reliable internet connection
• Photographic ID (if you don't have photo ID, you will need to complete the exam at heliguy™ HQ during office hours)
How Long Does An A2 CofC Last For?⌄
The A2 CofC qualification lasts for five years, after which you’ll have to renew it.
What Happens If I Fail The A2 CofC Exam?⌄
heliguy™ offers free resits if you fail your A2 CofC exam. If you have not completed your practical flight training within a year of passing your exam, you will be required to re-sit the exam.
